University Reform

educating ...

Engineering has always been the driving force behind industrial development all over the world. For this reason ecbp works to equip young Ethiopians with skills and knowledge in 8 universities throughout the country. With these universities’ Faculties of Technology ecbp is assisting the revising of the curriculum for students as well as for teachers of the vocational training system, carrying out the universities’ governance and management reform and human resource development, promoting linkages between universities and industries and developing the infrastructure on the campuses.

Through regular meetings with the heads of the faculties of technology and yearly University Days events ecbp allows for the country-wide interaction and experience sharing between the staff and students of the universities as well as the communities and guests for more relevant curricula and the organizational development of each of the universities.

Impacts

Technological development is understood in the program as a critical input for national development and as an outcome of adequate capacity to assimilate available technology and innovation of new ones. This capacity is mainly dependent on the capacity of teaching and research institutions to produce high quality engineers, technologists and relevant research.

ecbp has consequently focused on Ethiopia’s faculties of technology reforming their engineering and TVET teacher study programs, building up their institutions (good governance and remuneration system) as well boosting knowledge and technology transfer.

The major impacts of the University reform are:

  • Revised curricula in all engineering faculties, moves Ethiopian universities closer to international standards and better prepares students for the needs of the labor market.
  • All students graduating from Faculties of Technology will have practical experience built on top of their theoretical knowledge through a Qualified Internship System.
  • Cooperation between universities and industry is being set up that allows for technology transfer and market oriented research.
  • Cooperation agreements between Ethiopian and 4 European universities raise the quality of teaching, research and international exchange.
