Quality Infrastructure

Quality and standardizing ...

For Ethiopian products to be competitive in international markets, they must meet certain criteria. ecbp intends to make "Made in Ethiopia“ a mark of quality. By raising Ethiopian products and processes to international standards, Ethiopia will attract much needed foreign direct investment and create new markets for its goods and services. ecbp works closely with the Quality and Standards Authority of Ethiopia (QSAE) and the Ethiopian Consumer Protection Association (ECoPA) in order to achieve this.

Ethiopia is in the process of shifting towards a modern quality infrastructure system; separating the “service-providing” institutes, such as standard-setting and metrology bodies, from the “regulatory” framework. The government is taking the lead as a result of the absence of private initiatives; however the private sector is expected to engage increasingly over time, especially in the conformity assessment and standard-setting sectors.

A proper quality infrastructure will not only protect society and nature from damaging services and products, but will also improve competitiveness and complement the improved training given to the country’s workforce.

Impacts

The major impacts of the Quality Infrastructure reform are:

  • Ethiopian companies can now receive ISO 9001 Certification locally through the accredited body QSAE-Cert, saving significant amounts of time and money that previously had to be spent on foreign certification bodies.
  • Ethiopian factories throughout the country can now access mobile calibration services and therefore do not need to stop production to send measuring equipment for calibration.
  • Customers in markets are now assured that they are getting proper measurements after trained inspectors have been introduced.
  • Industries following the newly adapted/adopted 2,500 standards of QSAE can now be sure that they are meeting the requirements of potential export markets.
