As part of the Reforms of the Addis Ababa University, the Faculty of Technology is opening its doors for four days from November 15th to the 18th 2006.
Convened under the motto Engineering Tomorrow and with Ethiopian and international experts from the fields of education and technology, the University Days will explore the real situation of technology graduates in Ethiopia and how the university can best prepare them for their future careers and development.
The University Days are organized by the Addis Ababa University Faculty of Technology and supported by the Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp).
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi recently stated that the AAU’s reform was “timely and exciting”, committing his and the government’s full support.
Reflecting this emphasis, the University Days will be opened by H. E. Ato Fikru Desalegn, State Minister for Capacity Building, with welcoming addresses by Dr. Bayou Chane, Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Prof. Dr. Andreas Eshete, President of the Addis Ababa University.
A reception will be held afterwards where members of the press can meet with participants and guests. Among the invited guests are: Dr. Adahana Haile, State Minister for Higher Education, Chamber of Commerce, representatives of engineering associations, Dr. Werner Dieter Klucke, Cultural Attaché of the German Embassy and Ernst-Axel Momber, GTZ-Ethiopia country director, Martin Mueller, ecbp Director (German development cooperation).
The Opening Day will also include an art exhibition on the motto Engineering Tomorrow where sculptures, paintings and photographs from some of Ethiopia’s most talented young artists will be presented.
On Saturday November 18th the Faculty will host a Public Day at its Northern campus, Amist Kilo, and Building College (Southern campus), Lideta. On this day the Faculty will welcome the general public – among them high school students, parents and children, and anyone who has an interest in the Faculty and in higher education in general.
The Public Day will give people the chance to see the departments, meet staff and students, talk to representatives from industry and find out about job opportunities.
The departments of the Faculty of Technology are:
Northern Campus
Building College (Southern Campus)
While the university reforms are vital to the country, the Public Day will also be a celebration. The Public Day will be open to all, with activities for children, music, and much, much more.
Engineering is the driving force behind industrial development and young people must be equipped with the competencies and skills to build Ethiopia’s competitiveness and prepare themselves for the demands of a global economy. Reform of the engineering faculties is an essential element supporting Ethiopian efforts for rapid industrial development. The Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp), working under the Ministry of Capacity Building, is supporting this reform which will produce graduates equipped with the skills to lead Ethiopia’s development.
The Addis Ababa University, together with the Ministry of Capacity Building and Ministry of Education, has therefore instituted a wide-ranging and comprehensive reform of its Faculty of Technology. By uniting classroom based teaching with practical training – focusing on transparency and good governance, strengthened linkages with industry, accessing the skills of TVET graduates and the benefits of e-learning – the Faculty of Technology will produce a new generation of leaders, innovators and role models in the field of technology; graduates with a complete knowledge of their field and its application both in Ethiopia and abroad.
