Hollow Concrete Blocks in Dire Dawa Technology Display Center

On Friday April 20, 2007, at 8.30 am the Regional Micro and Small Enterprise Development Agency (ReMSEDA) will open the program for the inauguration of the display, demonstration and incubation center in Dire Dawa.

This center will be the first of many to be opened this year. Future locations include Tigray, Oromia, Amhara, Addids Ababa and Southern Nations and Nationalities People’s Region.

Technology Display Centers permanently show technologies, know-how and innovative products to local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in order to directly increase their knowledge and indirectly their competitiveness. New MSME start-ups (preferably Technical and Vocational Education and Training graduates) are trained on the latest technology and in the Business Incubation Centers they have the opportunity to use those technologies for free for a maximum of 6 months, to aid their success in the market as entrepreneurs.

One of the new technologies displayed in the center of Dire Dawa is the Hollow Concrete Blocks (HCB) machine. Based on a German HCB and adapted to the Ethiopian measurement scheme, the design produced by this machine will save costs and time, thanks to a revolutionary interlocking system applied to the blocks allowing them to be placed together without the need of cement on the vertical joint. This system is new to Ethiopia and will be introduced to existents machines, transforming the construction sector.

Approximately a 30% of mortar will be saved and the time of lying will be reduced on average 20%, leading to a reduction in labor costs.

The event will count with the presence of the Mayor of Dire Dawa, Ato Abddulaziz Mohammed, who will give and opening remark to all the assistants.
