The first lecture will discuss the Philosophy of Technology Studies. Dr. Bernhard Irrgang, Professor for Technology Philosophy at the Institute for Philosophy, Dresden, Germany, will talk about Technological Progress in Developing Countries. Dr. Workineh, Head of Philosophy Department/AAU, will moderate the lecture and lead a question and answers discussion afterwards.
The series, which is part of the reform of the Faculty of Technology, will run from January 15th to July 9th with two lectures per month exploring the importance of technology and engineering and the challenges facing Ethiopia’s industrialization process.
The interdisciplinary approach of the lectures opens new ground in the quest for industrialization, bringing together engineering studies with socials sciences, humanities and e-learning, finding new ways to progress and creating new networks between professionals and academics alike.
Future topics will be:
The speakers at BUILDING ETHIOPIA: LECTURES FOR DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE are internationally respected experts in their fields from throughout Europe. Moderators will be drawn form the Addis Ababa University.
Engineering is the driving force behind industrial development and young people must be equipped with the competencies and skills to build Ethiopia’s competitiveness and prepare themselves for the demands of a global economy. Reform of the engineering faculties is an essential element supporting Ethiopian efforts for rapid industrial development. The Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp), working under the Ministry of Capacity Building, is supporting this reform which will produce graduates equipped with the skills to lead Ethiopia’s development.
The Addis Ababa University, together with the Ministry of Capacity Building and Ministry of Education, has therefore instituted a wide-ranging and comprehensive reform of its Faculty of Technology. By uniting classroom based teaching with practical training – focusing on transparency and good governance, strengthened linkages with industry, accessing the skills of TVET graduates and the benefits of e-learning – the Faculty of Technology will produce a new generation of leaders, innovators and role models in the field of technology; graduates with a complete knowledge of their field and its application both in Ethiopia and abroad.
