ecbp Capacity Development: Pharmaceutical Sector

A Press Conference will be held in the ILRI Centre at 12.30 pm on the 15th September, 2006 with Shegaw Aderaw, Production Manager of Ethiopian Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Sh. Co., Rudi Völler, GMP Senior Expert and German Müller, from the engineering capacity bulding program (ecbp).

The Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp), in a new approach to support the private sector, is running a two days training, where in this occasion, the pharmaceutical sector will be called to discuss about Quality Assurance, i.e. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). This training is the first step of a whole process aimed at identifying and providing demand-driven interventions in regard to the quality level of the pharmaceutical sector.

The training therefore addresses “the big picture” of GMP such as international standards, legal systems as well as quality systems, technical instruments and processes such as inspection processes, risk assessment, failure evaluation and processes of establishing corrective measures. In line with the Value Chain Approach, the different relevant actors of the pharmaceutical sector are being brought together in these two days: manufactures of medical and pharmaceutical supplies (private sector), the Ethiopian Drug Administration and Control Authority (DACA) as well as other institutions like the National Veterinary Institute. The goal is not only to provide both sides – authorities and companies – with the expertise of Rudi Völler, a German GMP specialist, but also to gain a common perspective of the sector’s needs in terms of quality improvement. From that, concrete actions to be started within the next months can be determined.

ecbp designed to foster the on-going economic development of Ethiopia by improving the competitiveness of local industries collaborates with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI), the private sector and other relevant institutions. ecbp is formulating and implementing demand-driven interventions which upgrade the capacity of the selected sectors and support institutions.
