Addis Ababa University and ecbp launch second lecture series on industrial development

“Building Ethiopia: The Challenges of Economic Growth and Industrialization”

For the second time, the Faculty of Technology of the Addis Ababa University, together with the Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp), is organizing an interdisciplinary lecture series. Under the motto “Building Ethiopia: The Challenges of Economic Growth and Industrialization”, the lecture series aims at the establishment of “General Studies” as elective program of extracurricular and interdisciplinary lectures at the University. The first lecture, titled “Industrial Development in Ethiopia: Experiences of the Past and Future Projections”, will be held by His Excellency Ato Tadesse Haile, State Minister in the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The event will take place on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008, 6.00 pm, at the new auditorium of the Faculty of Technology (Amist Kilo).

The lecture series will focus on preconditions and obstacles of industrialization, economic growth and job creation, the relationship between economy and ecology as well as the role of non-governmental organizations in social and economic development. Comparison with other countries will be a central element of the lectures. The topics will be explored by taking an interdisciplinary perspective, thereby extending the current discussion on industrial development and its implication on society. Each lecture will be completed by a public discussion.

Ethiopian and international scientists and professionals from various disciplines are invited to participate in this academic event and enrich the debate with their opinions. The lectures will be held fortnightly, the last one on Wednesday, July 16th, 2008.

Background

Creating engineering capacities is vital to support the necessary shift towards economic growth and industrialization in Ethiopia. The Faculty of Technology therefore is undergoing a comprehensive reform of its study programs. The changes aim at extending higher education capacities and providing improved qualifications for tomorrow’s engineers. As part of the program a stronger emphasis in academic education is now given to cooperative education and demand orientation.

The lecture series is part of the reform efforts of ecbp, a national development program run by the Ministry of Capacity Building, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Education. ecbp is supported by several German development organizations. The first lecture series was organized last year under the motto “Engineering Towards Development and Change”.
